47%. the voters like the president mo than mitt romney but disapprove of his job performance that approve of it. the president has been trying to pin a label of outsourcer-in- chief on romney and pat himself on the back for saving gener gal motors. >> my experience has been working with memembers of labor and it managers to save the auto industry. >> romney has a response to that. >> this president hass been outsourcing a good deal of american jobs and self, but putting money into solar and wind energy companies that end up makg their products outsidede the united ststates. >> speaking of wind energy, i wonder at this stage of the campaign how much of the top of voters are absorbing. it keeps us busy and it keeps political consultants employed, but is it having any real impact on home americans vote in november? whwhat do you think mark? why is the race close?
you gave the fure. voters disapprove of the president's job handling of the econy. the president is trying to o make it a race between himselfnd mitt romney, and that t is why outsourcing, his investments, iss caribbean portfolio, the cayman islands, bermuda, and the rest of it become issues that the obama administration -- the campaign, and the administration as well, want to raise. >> colby? >> it is clr that the president does not want to run on the economy.y. i think we are getting it to the silly season when we start accusing each other of outsourcing. the fact of t matter is that outsourcing has been going on for so time and it is not because of somebody hitting the unit states, but because of controlling costs, and there is domestic outsourcing and offshoring of jobs.
that is because of economic reasons. yes not because t they hate jobs in america. this silly. i don't think that people set out to outsource. costs and drive this kind question. >> margaret? >> if your claim to the presidency is that you are a job creator and can do a better job than obama, and one of the ways to make money at bain capital is by taking over companies and then outsourcing jobs, that is very different from the preresident who has not been able to stop outsourcing, offshoring because of the republican house. he does have the votes on capitol hill to stop some o of thatat -- he d does not have th votes on capitol hill to stop some of the. romney has staked h his claim on his performance at bain capital whicich was proactively outsouing jobs because that is how you m make money. >> charles, i wonder how mucof the stock is having an impact on americican voters.
>> i think i.tis having very little impact. i agree entirely with colby. the entire outsourcing d debate is prepeposterous. it has been going on for decades, it has to do with globalization. it has nothing to do with obama or romney. it i iobvious that obama cannot run on his record. he has a terrible if you are years behind and that he cannot stand up foror -- terrible four years behind him m that he cannot stand up for, so what he does is distracting. romney's defense is to say you too. it is not only that you are outsourcing jobs. you are taking money of american workers in taxes and are doing wind and solar, and the cars are made in finland in englandnd the thewind and solar panels are being made in china. if you want to talk outsourcing which is a preposterous subje in the first bus, each will roll
charlotte -- in the first bus, each will hurl charges. >> i find myself uncomfortably disaeeing wit colby and comfortably disagreeing with charles. free t tradeas become shorthand for outsourcing jobs. it now is seen by a majority according to a republican pollster, as costing jobs. when you are just in different to the fact that places like flint michigan and ohio hahave been wipedut, to say "that is part of globalizazation," that is wonderful as long as you don't have a cambodian bureau chief coming into your news organization and working for 1/10 of the price and d costing jobs in the journalistic world. >> this is part of whose side are you on.
>> it is a question of dealing with facts. this is a good example that came out of politico -- we increase taris on sugar. why? to protect ourwn domestic industry. what does that do? it raises the price of sugar. what is the candy manufacturer do? he moves to cluster rica -- to costa rica, he can make this product cheaper and bring it back to the united states. that is not romney, that is not obama. that is protectionist actions by congress that raises the tariffs. they create the outsourcing. >> i think the facts are to against each other. -- arguue against each other. these are subsidized elsewhere. wewe cannot make tthree andlithiu batteries here. all this is the fairness argument whose side are you on trying to put romney in the camp
of people like him. have we ever elected a presesident with a swiss bank account? >> no. >> i don't know. have we, charles? >> i am not running for the presidency, and if i did, i would not have a swiss bank account entity have one? i have no idea. johnson w the most scrupulously careful businessman in american history. there was nothing in the past that to suggest any fancial shenanigans? come on, give me a bireak. what is going on here is thatt this is a campaign by obama -- he cannot run on his record, so he runs -- margaret is right fairness, o cares about you. the counter argument is quite strong. you talk about fairness. among african-americans unemployment is 14%. among hispanics 11% youth
unemployment is skyrocketing. the longest string of 8% unemployoyment in american history. if you care about americans, you want to start not by redistribution of wealth, but by strengthening and getting a growing economy.
sfx: sounds of marching band and crowd cheering sfx: sounds of marching band and crowd cheering so, i'm walking down the street, x: sounds of marching band and crowd cheering just you know walking, sfx: sounds of marching and crowd cheering d i found myself the middle of this parade honoring america's troops. which is actually quite fitting because geico has be serving the military for over 75 years. aawh no, look,k, i know this is about the troops and not about me. right, but i don't look like that. who can i write a letter to about this? geico. fifteen minutes could save you fifteen percent or more on car insurance.
>> let's not hold the vast majority of americans and our entire economy hostage while we debatete the merits of another tax cut for the wealthy >> i mean, thehe very idea of raising taxes on small busininess and job creors at the very time we need more bs is the sort of thing only an extreme liberal could come up with. >> "the sort of thing only an extreme liberal could come up with." is barack obama an extreme liberal, margaret?
>> i don't see it, but i gss mitt romney and his supporters do. i don't give advivice to campaigns -- markonce once d -- but imm looking at every objbjection to thee tax cuts going away and, why not fashion a program that of 3% to cover it? the argument that is that you are going to hurt small businessmen. it will only y touched 3% of f small businessme i in the united states, anthose are accountas and lawyers. why the people we need to protect? mark here things we do. [laughghteter] but it is only 3%, but republicans get this argument that you are hurting job creators. yoare not hurting job crater's by letting those tax cuts lapse. >> aren'the democrats divided on this? don't nancy pelosi and some of the others want a $1 million cut
off? >> tell me about the jobs created by the bush tax cuts on the wealthy. how many jobs dithat create? please, answer. >> 0, was that? >> the silence was deafening. >> whenever you hear "lolook i.e. what taxing job creators when you raise the taxes," i don't remember the -- >> clinton raised taxes and creating jobs. >> where do you start? >> anywhere you liked. >> the joint committee on taxation, which is not a right wing out fit reports that 53% of small business income will be affecte by this hike in taxes. obama himself in 2010, when he agreed with mcconnell to keep tax rates where they are, said many times, you d't raise
taxes in a recession. we are not technically in a recession, but we're clearly in a stagnant economy.. that is to quote obama himlf on this. it pleases him politically, h says we're not going to raise taxes. when he needed as a fairnesess issue in ann election not gaining traction in, he ll say the opposite. even if you have these tax hikes, it would raise the maximum of $8 billion a year. we have got a a $1.30 trillion at deficit. it is a distraction, a shiny after you are putting over here shiny object you are putting over here. if you wantt to attack the deficit, you have to do it with spending cuts, tax reform,m, entitlement reform, and if y you want it in taxaxation, it will have to be across the board. you cannot do it and have any effect on the debt by doing it only on the top 2%. >> margaret mentioned that i
used to work in campaigns. as the only panelist was a veteran of four losing cpaig -- [laughter] let me tell you what mitt romney is doing wrong. in any campaign, one of the most important exercises you have to go through is to woodshed your own candidate. to sit down and go through not just research on your opponent, bubut your own guy, and find out if there's something in your background, career, statements that could come back and bite us.. remember george w. bush's drunk driving arrest that was revealeled the weekend before the 202000 campaign and came close to costing him the electioion. romney as smart people. they did this with him. things like the swiss bank account and the cayman islands and in bermuda and luxembourg and all that stuff ce up, an his ta rates and romney went right through the stop sign. he did not want to discuss h his
self-absorption witith money -- this is a man who has been running for president for most of the 21s century. thiss not something that just jumped out at him he has made this decision, and he allowed barack oba to put him squary thehe defensive as farars jobs, there is one figure to remember -- more jobs created last year under barack obama in the private sector than in the eight years of george w.. bush's presiden in the private sector. >> even "the wall street journal" editorial-page says that romney has squanderered the susummer because he has let obama and define him ass a w wealthy elitist, and then a they excoriated him for being shot in the testy in n front of his mansion on the lake.
when the president was elected he talked about hope and change. whatever happened to hope and change? now it seems he's just coming right out of the box with the old-fashioned, negative ads. by starting negative, by going extremely tough and extremely hard, looking conventional, and frankly running ads that are inaccurate. barack obama's campaign and allies will run more negative ads against this republican nominee in 2012 than have ever been run in the history of the world. whatever happened to hope and change? romney ] i'm mitt romney, and i approve this message. ♪ ♪ ♪ ♪ ♪ ♪ ♪ ♪ ♪ ♪
